Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of my least brothers of mine, you did for me. (Matthew 25:40)
Reading the Bible in a Year:
Acts 1-3
Who is our brother? Physically, they were one father and one mother with us, as well as family engagement from both sides. Spiritually, they were sisters. Politically, they were countrymen compatriots. Really?
Jesus offers a sense of the unexpected. He called the poor, the sick, the stranger and the prisoner as "my brother" (v. 40). They represent the weak, helpless, could be oppressed and marginalized. They need a helping aid, but it is often treated as the scum of society. Foreigners can refer also to those of different ethnicities, different beliefs, different political options, minorities. No prisoners were imprisoned because of their own crimes, but there is also a victim of injustice. Surprisingly, Jesus drew people such as "brother", and consider their treatment as a treatment against himself. He chose solidarity with those who despised it.
Unfortunately, many people actually behave like Cain when God asked him about the whereabouts of Abel. Answer Cain - "I do not know! Am I my brother's keeper? "(Gen. 4: 9) - not just a lie, but a denial of their fraternity. The fabric is no longer regarded as a brother Abel, but strangers, even enemies. Instead of keeping, he killed him! It was opposite to that of Jesus.
So, who is our brother? How do we treat them? -ARS
