Act Despite Risks

Reading: 1 Kings 18: 1-15

When Jezebel cut off the prophets of the Lord, Obadiah took a hundred prophets, and hid them by fifty in a cave, and take care of their food and drink. (1 Kings 18: 4)

Courage-ah, how difficult finding the courage in difficult times like these. Why? Courage risky for people who do. As a result, not many people who dare to speak the truth in unrighteousness because his actions could be brought risks of adverse or harmful, perhaps even kill him.

Obadiah, the head of the Royal palace of northern Israel, are those who dare to take risks in a difficult situation. He is indeed the fear of God, but, on the other hand, he is serving a king, namely Ahab, who opposes God. Queen Jezebel, wife of Ahab, will cut off the prophets of God. But, secretly, Obadiah opposed the plan and he hid a hundred prophets of God in the cave, as well as taking care of their food and drink (vv. 3-4). Obadiah is really bold action, especially given that Obadiah is an ordinary person, not a prophet! He dared to take the risk: If the action caught, he would be killed by Jezebel!

Not a few people believe God placed in a position that is incompatible with the faith. We may work in a company that justifies fraudulent practices. Do we dare to uphold the holiness in the middle of a neighborhood that allow and legalize lawlessness? The decision to live in the truth might lead us to a situation which we did not expect. But, living in risk threats would not hinder God in declaring the defense.-SYS
