Why James 4:17 says, "so if one knew how he should do well, but he didn't do it, he's a sinner"? Let's review the intent of God one after another.
After the Lord God finished creating the universe, on the last day He created man. When man was created perfect, God saw that it was really very good (Gen. 1:31). That is the purpose of man was created, that is for the good.
Unfortunately, the sin of damaging the purpose God has created man for the good. Then, later appeared in man is selfishness, greed, arrogance, ignorance, crime, as well as self gratification of lust.
However, without care about the interests of its own, Christ willingly come to redeem the whole human sin (1 Pet. 1:18-23). Thus, by his sacrifice we can be born again (1Pet. 1:3).
Through his sacrifice, we can get new life in Christ. We became a nation that elected a royal priesthood, priesthood, a Holy nation, a people belonging to God himself. So that we can preach the great deeds of him who has called us out of darkness to light his magical (v. 9).
So, how we can now proclaim God's great deeds that? I.e. with the "do good" — have a way of life — so that people who live in the darkness (the iniquitous and slanderers) can glorify God on the day He visited them (v. 12). — SST
